The 2023 Queensland Country Life Showgirl State Finals was an experience like no other. I had the honour of attending as the 2023 South East Queensland Showgirl State Finalist, and I can’t express how lucky I am for that opportunity.
The Showgirl State Finals held in Brisbane was a remarkable gathering that showcased the strength, talent, and leadership of young women from across the state. This competition brought together women from various regional shows, highlighting their accomplishments and aspirations. It was an absolute pleasure to meet nine other women who all love their communities, and local shows. It was a unique opportunity for me as I was immersed in the agricultural show movement and discovered more about agriculture in Queensland.
State Finals were held across six days, all of them were filled with so many learning opportunities. The View Hotel, our home away from home, provided the perfect sanctuary for our showgirl journey. Our first day was filled with nerves, but we settled in for a professional development session facilitated by the Australian School of Etiquette. Here, I learned the finer points of self-presentation and the art of dining in an official setting.
This newfound knowledge proved invaluable the following day when we had the privilege of enjoying Morning Tea with the Governor of Queensland, followed by a lunch with Council members at Queensland Parliament House. Meeting Her Excellency was an awe-inspiring honour; her grace and kindness left an indelible mark on all of us. Her personal tour of the Governor’s House was a gesture of kindness that we will forever cherish.
The following days were marked by encounters with our generous sponsors and engaging professional development sessions. The Queensland Country Life Showgirl State Finals are incredibly fortunate to have sponsors who not only offer their support to the program, but also share their knowledge generously. I can’t thank them enough for their time and support, State Finals wouldn’t be possible without them.
Coming from an urban background, I was admittedly out of my element when it came to agriculture. However, my goal was never to win but to seize the opportunity and deepen my understanding of agriculture, make connections and learn how to inspire the next generation of Show Ambassadors. I believe I did just that, I have learnt so much about leadership, and what being a showgirl is really about. I am thankful for the other showgirls for teaching me so much through their stories from their family-owned farms or from their own showgirl journey.
I would also like to especially thank TAFE Qld (Robina), and in particular Audra, thank you so much for sponsoring my state finals journey, I wouldn’t be able to represent South East Queensland without your support.
To the Showgirl Committee, my gratitude knows no bounds. You are the unsung heroes who empower showgirls like me to learn the art of representing ourselves, our show societies, and our sub chambers. Your dedication and expertise shine brightly and serve as an inspiration to all.
As I close this chapter, my heart is full of gratitude, and I am eagerly looking forward to the chance to mentor and ignite the passion of the upcoming generation of Mudgeeraba Show Ambassadors.
